i.The short version
The sections below say all of that more carefully. By using Shelf, you agree to them.
ii.Who we are & agreeing to these terms
Shelf is built by Robin JL., a one-person studio based in France ("we", "us"). The service is the Shelf mobile app and the website at tryshelf.io (together, "Shelf").
By creating an account or using Shelf, you agree to these Terms of Use. If you don't agree, please don't use Shelf. If you're using it on Apple's App Store, Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies, and where it conflicts with these terms for App Store users, it takes precedence.
iii.What Shelf does
Shelf lets you save a book from a social post — typically by sharing an Instagram or TikTok post to Shelf — and turns it into a full book card with the cover, author, summary and other details. Your saved books form a personal library you can browse later.
- Identification is automatic and best-effort. We use AI plus public book databases to guess which book a post is about. It is usually right, but sometimes it isn't.
- Shelf is for personal use — organizing your own reading life, not republishing or redistributing content.
iv.Your account
- Sign-in by magic link. We don't use passwords. You sign in with a one-time link sent to your email, so keeping access to that inbox is how you keep access to Shelf.
- You're responsible for activity under your account and for keeping your email secure.
- Deleting your account. You can permanently delete your account and your entire shelf at any time from Settings → Delete account. This is immediate and irreversible.
How we handle your data is described in our Privacy Policy.
v.Acceptable use
Please don't:
- Use Shelf for anything unlawful, or to infringe someone else's rights.
- Scrape, hammer, reverse-engineer, or try to break our service or its rate limits.
- Resell or commercially redistribute data you pull out of Shelf.
- Upload or attempt to save content that is abusive, hateful, or illegal.
We may suspend or remove accounts that abuse the service, to protect Shelf and other readers.
vi.Books, covers & third-party data
Book metadata and cover images shown in Shelf come from public sources such as Google Books and Open Library. Those covers and descriptions belong to their respective publishers and rights-holders — not to us, and not to you. Shelf displays them to help you recognize and organize books, under fair use for that purpose.
Your own list — what you saved and when — is yours. We don't claim ownership of it, and you can export or delete it.
vii.Third-party platforms
Shelf works alongside services we don't control — Instagram, TikTok, Google Books, library apps like Libby, and bookshops. We're not affiliated with or endorsed by them. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms, and they can change or restrict how Shelf interacts with them at any time.
viii.Availability & changes
Shelf is a young product and is offered free of charge for now. We may add, change, or remove features, take the service down for maintenance, or discontinue it. We'll try to give reasonable notice of anything major, but we don't guarantee uninterrupted availability.
ix.Disclaimers
Shelf is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. In particular, automatic book identification can be wrong, and details (covers, summaries, ratings, page counts) may be inaccurate or missing. Don't rely on Shelf as an authoritative source.
x.Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of Shelf. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under mandatory consumer-protection law in your country.
xi.Termination
You can stop using Shelf and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you breach these terms or abuse the service. If Shelf shuts down entirely, we'll let you know and handle your data as described in the Privacy Policy.
xii.Governing law & changes
These terms are governed by French law, without prejudice to mandatory consumer protections in your country of residence. When we change anything material here, we'll bump the version and date at the top of this page; continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
